FAQ

Microsoft Fabric vs. Power BI: What's the Difference?

While both Microsoft Fabric and Power BI are part of Microsoft’s data ecosystem, they serve different purposes. Power BI is a business intelligence tool focused on data visualization and reporting, allowing users to create interactive dashboards and gain actionable insights. On the other hand, Microsoft Fabric is a comprehensive data platform that integrates Power BI with tools for data engineering, real-time analytics, and machine learning. Think of Power BI as a powerful tool for visualizing your data, while Microsoft Fabric provides an end-to-end solution for managing, analyzing, and collaborating on data across your organization.

Microsoft currently offers the Power BI Desktop tool for free. However, to publish and share content using a web-based server, a Power BI Pro license is required. This can be purchased for $10 per user per month. Other license types are available, including Microsoft Fabric.

Both Power BI and Tableau have their strengths and are considered leaders for Analytics and BI Platforms. Onware works with both tools on a regular basis and our CEO recently participated in a webinar discussing this topic

Power BI offers a wide variety of connectors to databases, APIs and other data sources built into the software. In some cases, we can connect to your existing systems directly and start working with your data. In other cases, due to performance and data freshness requirements, it’s necessary to load the data into a data warehouse or other location before we can start working with it.

Onware’s Associates have deep and comprehensive knowledge of Power BI. Most of our team have completed official Microsoft certification exams in Power BI and Azure to show their skill. In addition, we have Associates who have competed in the Iron Viz visualization competition, become certified Project Managers, and have spoken at conferences and industry events. We are always looking for a challenge to learn something new or an opportunity to show off our skills.
